Investment Thesis
VEU is Vanguard's equivalent of IXUS, tracking FTSE rather than MSCI. The two indices differ principally in their treatment of South Korea, which FTSE classifies as developed and MSCI as emerging — a distinction that matters more for labelling than returns. VEU excludes international small caps, which VXUS includes; investors wanting the complete non-US market should compare the two. Quarterly distributions suit income investors better than IXUS's semi-annual schedule.
Who It's For
Vanguard-ecosystem investors wanting broad international exposure, and those who prefer quarterly income. VEU is a direct substitute for IXUS at the same cost — the choice largely comes down to index provider preference and whether you want small-cap coverage, in which case VXUS is the better Vanguard option.
