Investment Thesis

VV is a near-substitute for an S&P 500 fund with two structural differences: it uses CRSP's index rather than S&P's, so there is no index committee making discretionary inclusion decisions, and it captures slightly more of the large-cap universe. In practice its returns track the S&P 500 closely enough that the choice between VV and VOO is largely a matter of index philosophy rather than expected outcome. At 0.04% the cost difference is negligible.

Who It's For

Core-portfolio investors who want broad US large-cap exposure and prefer a rules-based index without committee discretion. VV works as a direct S&P 500 substitute, and is sometimes chosen specifically to avoid holding the identical index as another account for tax-loss-harvesting purposes.
