Investment Thesis

VB offers broader and cheaper small-cap exposure than the better-known IWM. Its CRSP index holds roughly 1,400 companies versus the Russell 2000's 2,000, but crucially it reaches further up into mid-cap territory and applies buffer rules that reduce turnover at the boundaries — avoiding the well-documented Russell reconstitution effect, where front-runners profit from predictable annual index changes. At 0.05% versus IWM's 0.19%, the cost advantage compounds meaningfully over decades.

Who It's For

Long-term investors who want small-cap exposure as a permanent allocation rather than a tactical trade, and who prefer lower cost and lower turnover to the liquidity of IWM. VB suits buy-and-hold portfolios; active traders may still prefer IWM for its far deeper options market.
