Investment Thesis

KRE is the benchmark vehicle for expressing views on US regional bank health, offering equal-weighted exposure to over 140 mid-size American banks. The equal-weight methodology prevents the largest regional banks from dominating returns, giving every bank roughly equal representation. Regional banks are uniquely sensitive to the yield curve — they borrow short and lend long, so a steepening yield curve directly expands their net interest margins. The 2023 regional banking crisis caused by rapid rate increases created a deep discount in valuations that investors have been recovering from since.

Who It's For

Investors making tactical bets on US regional bank earnings recovery, yield curve normalization, and domestic US economic health. KRE suits those who believe regional banks are attractively valued relative to their earnings power in a normalized rate environment. Also used as a vehicle for expressing views on US credit quality, small business lending conditions, and Main Street economic health as distinct from the large Wall Street banks captured in XLF.
