Investment Thesis

IJR's defining feature is the S&P SmallCap 600's profitability requirement: companies must show positive earnings over the trailing four quarters to be included. The Russell 2000 has no such screen, which is why roughly a third of its constituents are unprofitable. That single methodological difference has produced a persistent long-run performance advantage for the S&P 600 and is the strongest argument for choosing IJR over IWM. It is one of the few genuinely free lunches in index construction.

Who It's For

Small-cap investors who want the size premium without the unprofitable speculative companies that populate the Russell 2000. IJR suits long-horizon holders who understand that the quality screen, not the ticker, is what they are buying. Widely regarded as the better default small-cap core holding.
