Investment Thesis

IJH tracks the same S&P MidCap 400 index as MDY but at a fraction of the cost — 0.05% versus 0.23% — which is why it has become the default institutional mid-cap vehicle. Unlike CRSP-based alternatives such as VO, the S&P index applies a profitability screen requiring positive earnings for inclusion, giving IJH a quality tilt that has historically reduced drawdowns. BlackRock split the fund 5-for-1 in February 2024 to lower the per-share price for retail buyers.

Who It's For

Cost-conscious investors wanting S&P-quality mid-cap exposure, and anyone currently holding MDY who has not compared the fee difference. The profitability screen makes IJH modestly more defensive than broader mid-cap funds, appealing to investors who want the size premium without the weakest companies in the segment.
